Lyrics

Waxing Poetic

My passport's expired
And I'm feeling oh so tired
I don't seem to want to
Get around much anymore

I never dreamed that I
Would live a paint-by-number life
A housewife, a couple of kids
A mortgage and a Willie Loman job

And oh how I long for my today's
To become my yesterdays

Now the kids have all grown up
And my wife just said she's had enough of me
So I shuffle around this old house
Alone with my failures and shattered dreams

Making promises to myself not to drink
Until the sun goes down
But these days go by so slowly
And the night makes me wait so long for it to come

And oh how I long for my today's
To become my yesterdays

I don't know why
I gave up the paper and the pen
I should have known better
To follow the voices in my heart

But the canvases in my mind's eye
Never ever came to life
And my words stopped flowing
Many, many, many years ago

And oh how I long for my today's
To become my yesterdays

Now the sun is sinking low
And the whiskey makes me glow
So I wax poetic:
What are hearts for but to be broken
What are hearts for but to be broken

Don't You Let the Darkness Drag You Down

Don’t you let the darkness drag you down
Dawn’s early light always comes around
Just take it slow
There’s still a long ways to go

Don’t you burn your candle at both ends
I don’t want for us to be just friends
I’d be so happy
To be so sad with you

Maybe it's all those years
That keep piling up on me
I seem to shed a lot more tears
When the leaves in Autumn disappear

Every life is filled with some regrets
Lots of coffee, lots of cigarettes
I’m not a schemer
But oh I’m such a dreamer

Trying to find my way back to your heart
Baby how about a brand new start
Give me all your frowns
And I’ll turn them upside down

Maybe it’s all those years
They keep piling up on me
I seem to shed a lot more tears
When the leaves in Autumn disappear

Don’t you let the darkness drag you down
Dawn’s early light always comes around
Just take it slow
There’s still a long ways to go

Don’t you burn your candle at both ends
I don’t want for us to be just friends
I’d be so happy
To be so sad with you

Maybe it’s all those years
They keep piling up on me
No I don’t want to be free
I want you to love me

Transistor Radio and Me

Daddy was a bulldozer, mama tried to keep her pride
The only thing I did was try and hide
Way up in my tree house, deep down in my snow fort
Transistor radio and me

Lying on my back, staring up at the sky
Simply trying to figure out why
Oh Daddy’s scream and mama's cry
Children shaking in the night oh those silent screams and black and blues

Oh kindred spirit where are you, oh kindred spirit please be true
Oh kindred spirit I feel so blue; let me sing to you

How could anybody steal the magic lantern
Shining in a child’s eyes
Leave them all alone throughout the cold, dark night
Clinging on to their fright

I hear the cries and whispers from a lost childhood
Oh family veins they run deep
And the blood it weighs heavy
It soaks and it stains and it can’t be washed away

Oh kindred spirit where are you, oh kindred spirit please be true
Oh kindred spirit I feel so blue let me sing to you

Oh kindred spirit where are you, oh kindred spirit please be true
Oh kindred spirit I feel so blue let me sing to you

Daddy was a bulldozer, mama tried to keep her pride
The only thing I did was try and hide
Oh way up in my tree house, deep down in my snow fort
Transistor radio and me

Yeah way up in my tree house, deep down in my snow fort
Transistor radio and me, just my transistor radio and me

Dry Soul

After all is said and done, we had a pretty good run
We had our ups and downs but we found some common ground
We wore our fingers to the bone, just to make ends meet
Our life was bittersweet

The mortgage is paid in full; we get by on our pensions
The kids still live nearby and the grandchildren seldom cry
I can still pin the tail on the donkey and finish the three-legged race
At the Topsfield County Fair

But long ago I left home with my book of poems
A bottle of wine and one hell-of-an open mind

In Autumn's early twilight Venus shines so bright
Silent we sit and listen to the night
Sometimes I sigh a little too loud, you turn your gaze to me
It’s too late to be free

At the end of the day, there’s not too much to say
How was your day, not bad, how about yours?
I guess that I’m restless in a permanent way
Sparring with my demons every single day

But long ago I left home with my book of poems
A bottle of wine and one hell-of-an open mind
Yeah, one hell-of-an open mind
What happened?

Dancing on the Moon

I've been gone oh for so long
And everything it feels so wrong
I miss the honeysuckle and the autumn leaves that rustle
And the lazy hazy days of summertime

The light in the middle of my darkness fades
And I'm left alone to play life's charades
Oh but to live my life without regret
And get a chance to place another bet

You and I we thought we could fly
To the moon and dance away the night

All of my life I've fought to survive
But oh how I long to thrive
I want to rewind my memories and edit out the bad scenes
And play back the good ones in slo mo

My life's a battlefield yet there is no war
Yet doubt keeps rapping at my door
The powerbrokers muse about their next move
Oh I wish I had something to prove

You and I we thought we could fly
To the moon and dance away the night

Let us jump on oh any old bandwagon
Oh can you just imagine
What have we got to lose
Maybe it'll chase away the blues

Let us go and find a brand new map
Oh, maybe we can find our way back
‘Cause I miss the honeysuckle and the autumn leaves that rustle
And the lazy hazy days of summertime

You and I we thought we could fly
To the moon and dance away the night
You and I we thought we could fly
To the moon and dance away the night
To the moon and dance away the night

It Still Hurts

It still hurts me after all these years
Tears still flow, I can’t let go
What, oh what else can I do
Pour myself another drink

When the bravado of youth
Crumbles into middle age
Find a balladeer to give you
The goose bumps you crave

Let yourself hang out at the edge of a cliff
Pull your rip cord with all your might
It is okay if it burns you out
As long as it doesn’t burn you down

When the bravado of youth
Crumbles into middle age
Find a balladeer to give you
The goose bumps you crave

It still hurts me, of course it does
Tears still flow, of course they do
What, oh what else can I do,
Pour myself another drink, another drink, another drink

Huge Swig of the Now

I'm turning the lights down low
All alone watching the late-night picture show
Our love is going, going, going, going gone
I'm the sad character in an old torch song

We used to ride the beat
Deep into the night
But you said I had too much soul
And my passion was out of control

So come on baby and how
Take a huge swig of the now
Stop chewing on your past
‘Cause yesterdays never last

Let’s climb to the top of paradise hill
And swallow a magical pill
Drink a cup of free will
And take a ride on this moment's thrill

So why not give it a go
With your late night bohemian beau
What do we got to lose
But those low-down aching blues

So come on baby and how
Take a huge swig of the now
Stop chewing on your past
‘Cause yesterdays never last

So why not give it a go
With your late night bohemian beau

Midnight Sun Tattoo

Tonight I tattooed a picture of the midnight sun over my heart
To help you find your way back home
Why is your aria always covered in blue?
I got a Ferris wheel it soars so high we can touch the sky

In the dawn of our dreams we rode the rails of the slow, slow train
While sipping Sake and heading towards the rainbow
We chased the fleeting colors with our open hearts and poetic souls
We were so happy not knowing what we did not know

Midnight sun shines day and night
Midnight sun will be your guiding light
When your mood is out of phase
And you’ve been lost for days

You lament your elusive prose all your coconuts have fled the grove
Oh you feel forsaken by those fruitless trees
And if you want to dance with the poetry of life you must accept
The silence of failure as deeply as the roar of success

When your demons pull on your weaker side and you are left all alone
To face the great divide you must dig down deep inside
I want you to know that me and your lovely smile
Will always wait for you in the shadow of the midnight sun

Midnight sun shines day and night
Midnight sun will be your guiding light
When your mood is out of phase
And you’ve been lost for days

Tonight I tattooed a picture of the midnight sun over my heart
To help you find your way back home
Way back home

Romancing the Ruins

Stop trying to romance the ruins
Of our war-torn relationship
You sift through the ashes of the past
And you try and rewrite all the facts
Of our long and twisted years together

Now you try and surface ancient relics
As a monument to our love
But the old dried up rose
That you pressed between two pieces of glass
Has been dead as long as our love

Open wounds they hurt so much
They are so tender to the touch
Why oh why did you have to lie
When you just could have said goodbye

I cannot sing a song
That’s not been swimming around in my head
That doesn’t drench all of my senses
That doesn’t scream from my body and my soul
That doesn’t take its beat from my heart

I gave all myself to you in love
Just like I do when I sing a song
But you left me all alone for so long
And now my songs have all gone silent
And my heart can’t find its way to the beat

Open wounds they hurt so much
They are so tender to the touch
Oh why oh why did you have to lie
When you just could have said goodbye
Oh why oh why oh why did you lie
When you just could have said goodbye

Frozen Juices

The day that you left me you told me to go
Into my studio and paint away my pain

So I picked up my brush and I stared at my canvas
While waiting for my muse to stir my creative juice

But the light went dark and all my juices froze
And all the open doors they started to close

Frozen juices dreams of a makeshift noose,
A psychedelic ghost and a big blank canvas

So I jumped on the whiskey train, as it whistled a lonely refrain
Empty canvasses rolling around in my brain

I’m gonna ride deep into the night
Pass through the tunnel and hope to find some light

But the night did not slip into the day
So I still had nothing at all to say

So I built an iron fort surrounded by a molten moat
To drive away my demons and to keep me afloat

Frozen juices dreams of a makeshift noose,
A psychedelic ghost and a big blank canvas

Last stop, last stop it’s the end of the line
I still can’t find my rhyme and I’m all out of time

So I'll take a walk around inside of my dreams
And hope that life is not what it seems

So I'll take a walk around inside of my dreams
And hope that life is not what it seems
